Highlights
Rates of VAP in Latin America are several times above those of high income countries.
The objective of this study is to identify risk factors for VAP in ICUs of Latin America.
Male gender, age, length of stay, and device utilization ratio increase the risk of VAP.
Public hospital, and surgical hospitalization increase the risk of VAP.
Adult-oncology, medical-surgical, and surgical ICUs showed the highest risk of VAP.
