  • Rates of VAP in Latin America are several times above those of high income countries.

  • The objective of this study is to identify risk factors for VAP in ICUs of Latin America.

  • Male gender, age, length of stay, and device utilization ratio increase the risk of VAP.

  • Public hospital, and surgical hospitalization increase the risk of VAP.

  • Adult-oncology, medical-surgical, and surgical ICUs showed the highest risk of VAP.
